New Products Emerge To Evade Red Light Cameras: CBS4 Print E-mail

Over the past decade red light cameras have been positioned at intersections throughout the state with a goal of increasing safety. For countless drivers, though, the technology is causing a lot of frustration.

Entrepreneurs in Denver have started creating new products to evade the cameras and the flashes come when a driver gets caught breaking the law.

David Greenberg is currenty shopping around his solution, a product called "The Phantom Alert." The software warns the driver of approaching "Red Light Camera Safety Zones." The information is downloaded to car navigation systems for $10 a month.

In addition to this software, Greenberg has created a spray for license plates, which makes them them unreadable by cameras. For $30 a can, the product Photoblocker reflects the camera's flash, essentially blurring out the license plate in a photo.

"Is this saying it's okay to run red lights? Absolutely not," Greenberg says. "But what do you think the police would say if I asked if this was legal? The actual spray -- it's completely legal."

Although the spray itself may be legal, Denver police say actually spraying it on your plates is not. Using any kind of product or substance to make a license plate unreadable is illegal in Denver.

Many Denver residents feel the cameras are not in fact fulfilling a duty to serve and protect. Kaidan Nguyen wasn't smiling when one such camera snapped him at an intersection. He claims he did not go through the red light where he was ticketed and that he was just over the line when the camera nailed him.

"If they are really there to serve the public for safety, I'm all for it," Nguyen says. "I believe if I violated something I should own up to it. But in this situation I don't ... I didn't."

Redflex, the company that operates Denver's red light cameras, said it welcomes the naviation warning system, saying it in fact leads to safe driving.

But as far as the spray goes, they claim it doesn't work, something Phantom Alert's manufacturers strongly deny.
